People also call this gross revenue when they want to contrast it with net revenue, which subtracts customer returns, refunds, and discounts. They are generally the same thing.

Examples
A drink you sold today
You run a coffee company. A customer pays $6 for a drink. That $6 is revenue: money you earned from the sale. It shows up on the income statement. Cash goes up because they paid; revenue is the earning, not the bank balance.
An unpaid invoice is still a sale
You run a landscaping company. You finish a yard and send a $1,200 invoice. The customer has not paid yet. That $1,200 is still revenue, and it sits in accounts receivable until they pay. Do not wait for the deposit to record the sale. When the payment arrives, cash goes up and receivable goes down; you do not record the sale again.
Why it matters
You will see revenue at every close. It is the top line on the income statement: what you earned from sales in the period. Treat bank deposits as revenue and you will miss unpaid invoices, or you will count a loan as a sale. Treat the bottom line as revenue and you are quoting leftover after costs. Use the sales total when a form or a lender asks how much the shop sold.

Is revenue the same as gross revenue?
Yes, in ordinary use. People say gross revenue when they need to contrast it with net revenue after returns, refunds, and discounts. Gross sales is the more specific billed-sales figure after trade discounts and before returns.
Is revenue the same as profit?
No. Revenue is what you earned from sales. Profit (net income) is what is left after expenses.
Does revenue mean the money is in the bank?
No. An unpaid invoice is still revenue. It sits in accounts receivable until the customer pays.
Where do I see revenue in QuickBooks or Xero?
Open the profit and loss (the income statement). Income or sales lines at the top are revenue. Set the dates to the period you care about.
