Our take
- Best for
- A sole practitioner or firm that wants a cited answer on US federal or SALT questions without browsing a research library page by page.
- Not ideal if
- Anyone who needs sales tax calculated on an invoice, a return prepared and e-filed, or a published team price.
- Standout
- Answers carry in-line citations to primary sources and Tax Notes, with unlimited questions on the published Individual plan.
About Blue J
Blue J is a tax research workspace for accountants. You type a question in plain language, upload a file when the facts are in a document, and get an answer with in-line citations and a source list. You can ask a follow-up in the same thread and draft a memo or a client email from it. The support article for US federal work lists the Code, regulations, IRS rulings, and court cases, plus Tax Notes commentary. The pricing page says the Individual plan includes US federal and SALT coverage. You still apply judgment, and you still prepare the return in your tax software.
Avalara, TaxJar, Anrok, and Vertex calculate or file sales and use tax on a transaction. Canopy is the firm's portal, tasks, and billing. Blue J does not do those jobs. It answers from primary sources, Tax Notes, and, on the support article, IBFD cross-border material. The pricing page writes the Individual plan as US federal and SALT. That same support article also lists Canadian, UK, and IBFD libraries. Whether those libraries are inside the Individual plan is not stated on the pricing page.
Firms keep it when staff are still spending an afternoon hunting a code section, and a reviewer wants the citation next to the sentence before the memo goes out. Sole practitioners can start on the published plan after a 7-day trial with no credit card. Multi-user firms are sent to sales for SSO, onboarding, and usage reporting.
Pricing
Individual is $1,498 per user per year on the pricing page, after a 7-day trial with no credit card. One sole practitioner pays that. There is no seat minimum on that plan. Team (SSO, onboarding, usage insights) has no published price. The page says no add-on fees. A five-person firm cannot be priced from the public page.
Individual
Sole practitioners. A 7-day trial does not require a credit card. This is the only dollar amount on the pricing page.

Blue J does not close the books. You still reconcile and lock the period in QuickBooks, Xero, or the ERP. You open Blue J when a tax question comes up, not when you match the bank.
You can hand over a memo or email drafted in Blue J with citations attached. The reviewer still needs the return file and the ledger. Blue J does not e-file.
Features
- Ask the question and open the citation
- Type a tax question and read an answer with in-line citations and a source list. The US federal support article lists statutes, regulations, IRS rulings and publications, and cases from the Supreme Court, Tax Court, and other federal courts, plus Tax Notes news and commentary. Follow-up questions stay in the thread.
- Upload a file into the research thread
- The pricing page includes unlimited file uploads on the Individual plan, alongside unlimited questions and drafting. You attach the document that holds the facts, then ask about that file. It does not prepare the return.
- Draft the memo or the client email
- From the same thread you can generate a memo or an email. The Individual plan lists this with no add-on fee. A person still checks the citations before anything goes to a client.
- Use US federal and SALT on the published plan
- The pricing page says the Individual plan includes full US federal and SALT coverage, updated daily, with primary and secondary materials. State coverage on the support article includes state, local, and property tax for all 50 states. Canada, the UK, and IBFD cross-border libraries are documented on the support article, not as a line item on the pricing page.
- Start the trial, then buy or call sales
- Homepage and pricing page offer a 7-day trial with no credit card. Individual is $1,498 per user per year and includes SOC 2 Type II. Team adds dedicated support, guided onboarding, firm-wide usage insights, and SSO, and is contact sales. The pricing page says there are no add-on fees on these plans.
