Our take
- Best for
- CPA firms that want cited tax answers from Checkpoint, plus a place to ask questions of an uploaded return, without buying the full research library for every seat.
- Not ideal if
- A shop that needs sales tax on the invoice, a firm that needs Checkpoint Edge on every user at a published price, or anyone shopping for Accounting CS write-up.
- Standout
- Tax Research cites Checkpoint Edge; Essentials answers from Checkpoint content with a hard cap of 20 cited responses per user per week and no Edge access.
About CoCounsel Tax
CoCounsel Tax is where a tax staffer asks a question, reads a return, or drafts a deliverable in one workspace. You ask in plain language. Tax Research answers from Checkpoint, the Code, and government sources, with a citation you can open. You can upload a return, a K-1, or a client file and ask what was claimed, what carried forward, or what looks off. Templates cover repeat multi-step tasks. Essentials is the smaller daily tool: document upload, workspaces, and a cap of 20 Checkpoint-backed answers per user per week. It does not include Checkpoint Edge. The books and the filed return stay in whatever system you already use.
Avalara, TaxJar, and Anrok calculate and file sales tax. Vertex is the ERP indirect-tax engine. Canopy runs practice management. CoCounsel does not calculate tax on an invoice and does not replace the filing system. It is also not Thomson Reuters Accounting CS, the firm's write-up ledger, even though both sit on thomsonreuters.com. Essentials is described for small and mid-market CPA firms. Tax Research adds Checkpoint Edge, unlimited Checkpoint citations, and state charts. Audit and Accounting swaps in Checkpoint audit and accounting content instead of tax content.
Firms keep it when the memo has to cite Checkpoint, and when several people need one workspace instead of a shared inbox of research links. Staff who only need everyday answers stay on Essentials. People doing multistate or higher-risk questions move to Tax Research, which is the plan that includes Checkpoint Edge.
Pricing
The plans-pricing page showed CoCounsel Tax Essentials at $1,300 per year with 1 user selected. It says online pricing is available for tax and accounting firms with up to 10 users, then contact sales. Other user-count prices were not in the fetched table, so a 5-person firm is not priced here. Each Essentials user gets 20 Checkpoint-backed answers a week. Tax Research and Audit and Accounting had no dollar amounts. The research add-on is described as per user, with no figure.
Tax Essentials
Small and mid-market CPA firms that want everyday AI answers without Checkpoint Edge. The plans-pricing page showed this price with 1 user selected. Online pricing is described for firms up to 10 users; other seat prices were not in the fetched table.

Features
- Ask Checkpoint for the controlling authority
- Ask in plain language and get code sections, regulations, rulings, and guidance with citations back to Checkpoint and primary sources. Tax Research includes Checkpoint Edge, Checkpoint tax content, unlimited Checkpoint citations, and state charts. Essentials uses Checkpoint content in the background and does not include the Edge library.
- Read a return, K-1, or client file
- Upload a return, a K-1, or a client file and ask what was claimed, what carried forward, or where the file looks inconsistent. The product page also covers partnership and S corp details such as capital accounts and distributions. You still sign the return in your tax software.
- Run a template and draft the deliverable
- Templates and agent workflows cover multi-step tasks. You can turn research into a client deliverable with citations. Tax Research and Audit include shared workspaces and artifact creation. Essentials includes templates, and shared workspaces are marked limited on the compare table.
- Stay inside the Essentials weekly cap
- On the plans-pricing page, each Essentials user gets unlimited conversations and up to 20 Checkpoint-backed responses per week. Document uploads and summaries do not use that allowance. The firm knowledge base is listed up to 10,000 documents. Workspaces are 10 per week. Checkpoint Edge, deep research tools, eForms, and state comparison charts are not in Essentials.
- Step up to Tax Research or Audit
- Tax Research is the Checkpoint tax plan: Edge, unlimited citations, state charts, usage analytics, and SOC 2. Audit and Accounting includes Edge plus Checkpoint audit and accounting content, and not Checkpoint tax content. Neither plan showed a dollar amount. The Essentials FAQ says a Tax Research add-on is priced per user, and that audit and accounting versions of Essentials are not available yet.
