Vertex

Enterprise sales, use, and VAT engine for SAP, Oracle, or NetSuite. Quote-only. Not TaxJar and not your ledger.

Best for

Mid-market and enterprise tax teams that already live in SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, or Shopify Plus and need one sales, use, and VAT engine across those systems.

Not ideal if

A 1-50 person US shop that wants TaxJar-style published prices, tax inside QuickBooks Online, or a Saturday signup. Vertex is enterprise tax, not TaxJar.

Standout

One O Series engine that can sit on the ERP and on Shopify, with Express Returns filling US and Canada forms from the same calc data.

About Vertex

Vertex is not the ledger. You connect Vertex O Series to SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, Workday, or Shopify. The engine calculates sales, use, and VAT on the sale or purchase and writes the tax amount back to that system. You still close in the ERP or the store. Add Express Returns if you want US and Canada sales, use, and GST forms filled from the same calc data. File & Pay is a separate Vertex service.

That is a different job from TaxJar, which reports and AutoFiles US sales tax at published prices, or Anrok, which writes SaaS tax back onto QuickBooks Online or Xero. Avalara is the other contact-sales engine and is the one with a documented QuickBooks Online and Desktop path plus published Select prices. Stripe Tax lives on Stripe charges. Native QuickBooks Online sales tax can be enough for one or two states. Vertex is the ERP-class tax engine: one policy across finance, procurement, and commerce, sold through sales.

People who stick have a tax team (or a Vertex-literate partner), already live in SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, or Shopify Plus, and need one engine instead of a cart plugin plus a spreadsheet of returns. Controllers keep it for jurisdiction content and a single tax policy. Implementation and a custom quote are the cost of that.

What people who used it say

What they tend to like

  • US sales tax logic they trust at ERP scale

NetSuite admins comparing Vertex to Avalara call out solid US sales tax logic as the reason to keep it.

  • VAT and EU calc when the ERP is already NetSuite

r/Netsuite comments say Vertex handles UK VAT and EU calculations; the complaint is the connector, not the content.

  • The heavier engine after Avalara

r/SalesTax shops leaving Avalara describe Vertex as more expensive and the one they pick when they want the deeper engine.

What they hesitate about

  • Heavy setup; rule changes need an admin

The same NetSuite comparison says every rule change needs developer or admin help, and multi-entity is painful.

  • NetSuite connector is clunky on complex B2B

r/Netsuite reviews praise VAT content and then call the NetSuite integration clunky for complex B2B scenarios.

  • Not turnkey; you still manage it

r/SalesTax: Avalara, Vertex, and other automation still need an active tax owner. Support and communication complaints show up on r/Netsuite too.

You still close in the ERP. The tax team reviews Vertex determinations against the GL, then Express Returns or the heavier North America Returns product. File & Pay is optional.

Export reports and extracts from O Series, or hand over signature-ready Express Returns. Most US CPAs will not implement Vertex. A tax team or Vertex-literate partner owns the file.

Features

Calculate sales, use, and VAT on the transaction

Connect O Series to the ERP, billing, or cart. Vertex assigns jurisdiction, applies current rates and rules, and sends the tax amount back to that system. Official O Series copy names about 19,000 jurisdictions. You still post and close in the ERP.

One engine across ERP, procurement, and commerce

Official partner pages and the current logo strip name SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Workday, Shopify, BigCommerce, and Coupa. The point is one tax policy across those systems, not a plugin that only lives in Shopify.

US and Canada returns from Express Returns

Express Returns is an add-on on O Series Cloud. It fills sales, use, and GST/HST/PST/QST forms from the calc data and can output PDF or e-file formats. Optional File & Pay lets Vertex submit and remit. This is not TaxJar AutoFile with a published per-return price.

Exemption certificates in Certificate Center

Certificate Center stores and applies exemption certificates so the next invoice can calculate as exempt. APIs can search, create, and edit certificate and customer records. It is a separate product, not a free Shopify toggle.

Address cleansing for US jurisdiction assignment

The Address Cleansing add-on uses USPS ZIP+4 and lat/long to assign a Tax Area ID (state, county, city, district) when city and district lines overlap. It is sold as an add-on, not the starter US checkout tax.

Deploy on-prem, cloud, or at the edge

O Series can run on-prem, in Vertex cloud (AWS, Oracle Cloud, or Azure), or as O Series Edge containers at the point of sale. Shopify uses O Series Cloud. There is no self-serve dollar plan on either path.

Pricing

Contact sales. Official US pages publish no dollar price, no per-state ladder, and no Shopify app fee from Vertex. Shopify help says Shopify itself charges nothing extra to attach Vertex; Vertex still quotes. A 5-person, ~500-transaction shop is not in this sales cycle. Third-party blogs guess high thousands to six figures a year; those are not official and should not ship as a starting price.
