Our take
- Best for
- US and UK shops that already rec in QuickBooks Online or Xero and need a 13-week cash forecast the team can share, without replacing the ledger.
- Not ideal if
- Anyone whose books are not in QuickBooks Online or Xero (NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Desktop, or a spreadsheet-only file), or a shop that only needs the built-in QBO or Xero cash planner.
- Standout
- A rolling cash graph built from reconciled invoices and bills, with expected payment dates and eight named scenarios, on a one-way read-only connection.
About Float
Float is not the ledger. You connect QuickBooks Online or Xero. Float pulls reconciled bank balances, unpaid invoices, bills, and bank lines every 24 hours (or when you run a sync) and builds a rolling cash graph. You set expected payment dates, compare up to eight scenarios, and export a CSV or PDF. The connection is one-way and read-only: nothing writes back to the books.
That is the opposite of Kick, where the books live in Kick. Fathom sits on the same files and is built for P&L, balance sheet, and group reports, with cash as one of the statements. Jirav is quote-only FP&A (budgets, workforce, dashboards). QuickBooks Online's Cash Flow Planner and Xero's Cash Flow Manager stay inside the ledger, stop at a shorter horizon, and do not give you named side-by-side scenarios.
People who stick already rec in QuickBooks Online or Xero and are tired of rebuilding a 13-week sheet after every close. Owners and fractional CFOs on public forums keep it because the forecast traces back to the invoice or bill, and the team shares one live view. Official customer stories say the first setup takes work, then the weekly pass is short.
Pricing
A 5-person US shop under £2m trailing revenue (pulled from the last full year in QBO or Xero) pays Essentials: $105/mo billed annually or $130 month-to-month. Users are unlimited, so seats are not the add-on. Cross £2m and you land on Growth at $215/$265. A second legal entity needs Scale ($315/$389 for up to 5 companies), then $63/$78 per extra company. Essentials onboarding is optional at £99; Growth and Scale include it. 14-day trial, no card. Advisor pricing is quote-only. The live stub's Early £40 / Growing £65 / Scaling £90 cards are stale.

You still close and lock the period in QuickBooks Online or Xero. Float refreshes after those recs (daily or on demand). Budget versus actuals uses the larger of the two figures, so underspend does not automatically free forecast cash.
Invite the accountant as a Viewer, or export cash flow and AR/AP summaries as CSV or PDF. The CPA still needs the QBO or Xero file. Float is not a year-end tax package.
What people who used it say
What they tend to like
Better than a thinner QBO cash add-on
One r/QuickBooks owner tried Cash Flow Frog, did not get the view they wanted, and moved to Float.
Xero users sleep better with a live 13-week view
An r/startups comment: a fan of floatapp.com; said it saved sleepless nights and sits on their Xero file.
Advisors pair it with the client's ledger
r/smallbusinessuk: a client used Float and it seemed to do the job. r/freelanceuk: FreeAgent plus Float for cash and scenarios.
What they hesitate about
It needs Xero or QuickBooks Online
An r/ynab commenter wanted a Float-like scenario tool without those ledgers. Official pages confirm no direct bank feed.
Some shops leave when spend is mostly fixed
One r/smallbusiness comment: they used to use Float, expenses were more fixed, and it had worked for them. The job faded.
Public complaint corpus is thin
Forum mentions are short recommendations, not month-by-month product threads. Do not treat vendor homepage quotes as owner reviews.
Features
- Connect the ledger, get a cash graph
- Link QuickBooks Online or Xero in a few minutes. Float imports reconciled bank balances, invoices, bills, and bank lines every 24 hours, or on demand. It does not connect to the bank itself. The connection is read-only.
- 13-week ops view and a monthly board view
- Use the rolling 13-week graph for near-term cash, then zoom to daily, weekly, or monthly. Essentials caps the monthly forecast at 12 months. Growth and Scale extend it to 36 months.
- Eight named scenarios next to the base forecast
- Toggle income and cost lines, or build a what-if (late client, new hire) beside the live forecast. Pricing includes 8 scenarios on every plan. Some product pages say unlimited; the price card is the cap.
- AR and AP on expected payment dates
- Every open invoice and bill from the ledger lands with the date you expect cash to move, not only the invoice terms. You can split a line into part payments and see the cash dip before you commit.
- Budgets versus actuals, with a catch
- Float suggests recurring costs from history. When actuals arrive, it uses whichever figure is larger: the budget or the actual. Underspend still shows the budget amount, so the forecast can look tighter than cash that actually stayed.
- Multi-entity cash on Scale
- Scale consolidates up to five Xero or QuickBooks Online companies into one cash view, with currency conversion if they differ. Extra entities are billed per company. Comments and Admin / Editor / Viewer roles are on every plan.

Pick something else instead of Float
QuickBooks Online
Stay in QuickBooks Online's Cash Flow Planner if a monthly glance from the bank feed is enough and you do not need named scenarios, expected dates, or a 13-week ops view.
Xero
Stay in Xero's Cash Flow Manager if a 180-day snapshot from open invoices, bills, and recent recurrences is enough. Float is the add-on when you want 36 months and side-by-side scenarios.
Fathom
Pick Fathom instead if the job is management reports, P&L and balance-sheet forecasts, and group consolidations, not a dedicated 13-week cash graph.
Jirav
Pick Jirav instead if you need full FP&A (workforce, operating drivers, board packs) and will take a sales quote. Float is cash-only at a published price.
Kick
Pick Kick instead if you want the software to be the ledger. Float sits on QuickBooks Online or Xero; Kick replaces them.
