Klippa

Snap receipts and invoices, approve them, then book into QuickBooks or Xero. Cards are Pliant Visa Europe.

Best for

EU finance teams that will snap receipts, approve purchase invoices, and book into QuickBooks, Xero, Exact Online, or Twinfield, and that can live with euro add-ons and a sales demo.

Not ideal if

A US-only shop that wants a free charge card, ACH reimbursements, and a same-day QuickBooks Online file. Cards are Pliant Visa Europe with a 10-user floor. Support hours are CET. The accounting connector is extra.

Standout

Expenses and purchase invoices in one EU-hosted app, with published euro prices and a documented QuickBooks or Xero booking step.

About Klippa

Klippa's spend product is now sold as Doxis SpendControl. It is not the ledger. An employee photographs a receipt in the iOS or Android app, forwards an invoice to a SpendControl mailbox, or swipes a Pliant Visa card. OCR fills merchant, date, amount, VAT, and currency. A manager approves. Finance books the line into QuickBooks or Xero (help: one QuickBooks company per environment; Xero tracking categories). You still close and lock the period in those books.

It does not replace QuickBooks Online or Xero. Kick is the opposite: Kick is the ledger. Ramp is the free US card program with SMS receipt chase. Expensify is the US phone camera plus ACH payback. Dext is the bookkeeper-grade capture tool that publishes into those files. Rydoo is the other European expense app with published dollar seats. Klippa's extra is expenses and purchase invoices in one EU-hosted app, with Peppol e-invoices and connectors that also name Exact Online, Twinfield, DATEV, SAP, and NetSuite.

People who stick are usually Dutch, German, Belgian, or other EU finance teams that already live in Exact or Twinfield and want the phone scan plus AP in one login. They accept euro pricing, a demo, and a 2–6 week QuickBooks setup. Bookkeepers care that the accounting connector is a paid add-on (from €50/mo) and that master-data sync runs twice a day unless an admin hits refresh.

What people who used it say

What they tend to like

  • Snap, approve, and book in one login

Vendor case pages describe registering expenses and invoices in one cloud app, then approving and processing. Independent US reviews of that flow are thin.

  • OCR fills the receipt fields

Official FAQ: merchant, purchase date, total, VAT rate, VAT amount, and currency. Invoice extract also includes invoice date and number.

  • The QBO or Xero file stays the books

Help walks an admin through an OAuth connect. Approved claims get a booking suggestion. You still close in QuickBooks or Xero.

What they hesitate about

  • The cheap seat is not the books seat

Published tables put approval workflows, expense reports, and accounting connectors on extra monthly fees. A shop that only sees €5/user will under-budget.

  • The mobile app still needs bugfix releases

2025–2026 App Store notes include attachments on the wrong transaction, card transactions failing to save, date-picker limits, and Pro menu items missing.

  • Almost no public US owner write-up

The US App Store had too few ratings to show. Trustpilot for klippa.com is a handful of reviews and is easy to confuse with unrelated klippa.io video tools. Reddit and HN had no useful SpendControl threads this pass.

Close is review and book in SpendControl, then lock the period in QuickBooks or Xero. Help: bookkeeping sync runs at noon and midnight; an admin can refresh. Booking needs an accounting relation, general ledger, and VAT code. Receipts can attach to the entry. Implementation for QuickBooks is usually 2–6 weeks.

Export CSV, XLSX, PDF, or UBL, or book into the connected file. No US year-end tax package or 1099 e-file was documented. Support calls are CET.

Features

Snap a receipt, submit the claim

Photograph a receipt in the iOS or Android app, or upload on the web. OCR fills merchant, date, amount, VAT rate, VAT amount, and currency. The employee adds a short description and submits. Official FAQ: categories map to a general-ledger and VAT code so finance can book with one click.

Email invoices in, then approve

Forward a purchase invoice to a SpendControl mailbox, upload a file, or scan it in the app. OCR reads supplier, invoice date, invoice number, totals, and VAT. Custom approval workflows are +€50/mo on the published tables. Duplicate and fraud checks sit on the Effective invoice and expense cards.

Book into QuickBooks or Xero

An admin connects QuickBooks or Xero under Company settings / Connections. Help: one QuickBooks company per environment. Xero pulls tracking categories for projects, cost units, and cost centers. Approved lines get a booking suggestion (supplier, GL, VAT, dimensions). Accounting connectors start from €50/mo; ERP connectors from €100/mo. Vendor: implementation is usually 2–6 weeks.

Mileage, per diems, and reports

Mileage uses Google Maps. Premium adds per diems, Netherlands CO2 registration, and GoBD / AEAT compliance. The expense-reports module is +€50/mo. Export formats named on the FAQ: CSV, XLSX, PDF, and UBL. Documents store for 10 years.

Issue Pliant Visa cards (Europe)

Physical and virtual Visa cards, issued by Pliant OY (Finland, Visa Europe). Official card FAQ: €5 per user per month, 10-user minimum, plus a €600/year expense-management module. Apple Pay and Google Wallet are named. Foreign-currency swipes use the Visa rate with no Pliant surcharge. This is not a US issuing program.

Peppol e-invoices and a separate IDP product

SpendControl is a certified Peppol Access Point and can process e-invoices. Doxis AI.dp (formerly Klippa DocHorizon) is a different SKU: document extraction via interface, API, or SDK. Do not buy AI.dp if you only need receipts and bills in the books.

Pricing

A 5-person expense shop is 5 × €5 = €25/mo on Effective, then typically +€50 for approvals and +€50 for the accounting connector, so about €125/mo before VAT if you actually hit the books. Invoice Effective is a separate €95/mo (4,000 invoices/year, 10 users). Cards are €5/user/mo with a 10-user minimum (€50/mo) plus a €600/year expense module on the card FAQ. Custom adds SSO, the SpendControl API, and a company logo. There is no published USD price. The path to try it is a scheduled demo, not a self-serve checkout.
