Our take
- Best for
- CPA firms that want cited US or Canadian research, a memo, and a first-pass review of a prepared return, with optional prep inside Drake, UltraTax, CCH Axcess, Lacerte, or ProConnect.
- Not ideal if
- A shop that needs sales tax on the invoice, a buyer who wants a published per-user price, or an individual using the separate free 25-question plan on the same site.
- Standout
- Agent Andrew reviews a prepared 1040, 1041, 1065, 1120, or 1120-S against source documents, and Pro Plus prep runs inside the tax software the firm already uses.
About TaxGPT
TaxGPT at taxgpt.com is the research and review product for accountants, enrolled agents, and tax attorneys. You ask a federal, state, local, or Canadian question and get an answer cited to the Code, regulations, IRS or CRA material, and cases. You upload a return or notice as a PDF or image and ask about that client's facts. Writer drafts a memo, an IRS or CRA notice reply, or a client email. Agent Andrew reviews a prepared 1040, 1041, 1065, 1120, or 1120-S and marks mismatches to source documents, missed items, and items already cleared. Client Intelligence keeps entities and prior filings on the profile so the next question is about that client. The same company also offers a separate free research plan for individual taxpayers. The firm product is Pro, Pro Plus, and Enterprise.
Avalara, TaxJar, Anrok, and Vertex calculate transaction tax. Canopy is practice management. Those tools do not answer a cited research question. On Pro Plus and Enterprise, Cowork adds agents that prepare a return inside Drake, ProConnect, UltraTax, CCH Axcess, or Lacerte, plus a bookkeeping workflow the site says runs in the client's existing accounting software. The pages opened do not name QuickBooks Online or Xero. The FAQ says Cowork is for US firms. A person still reviews the flags and signs the return.
Firms keep it when research, the memo, and a first-pass return review need to sit on the client profile, and when prep should stay inside the tax software they already license. The FAQ says TaxGPT is an aid: you still check the primary source before you rely on an answer.
Pricing
The firm pricing page lists Pro, Pro Plus, and Enterprise with no dollar amounts. The FAQ says the quote depends on users, industry, and requirements, and that a live demo is required before an account is activated. The same FAQ also says a free trial exists. A five-person firm cannot be priced from the page. A separate free plan for individual taxpayers (25 questions, 1 entity, 1 Andrew upload) is on the same site and is not these firm tiers.

Cowork's bookkeeping workflow says it can carry bookkeeping through month-end close in the client's existing accounting software. That software is not named. You still lock the period there. Agent Andrew reviews a prepared return; it does not close the books.
Cited research, a memo, and an Andrew report can go to the reviewer. On Pro Plus, prep runs inside Drake, ProConnect, UltraTax, CCH Axcess, or Lacerte. The CPA still signs the return. TaxGPT does not file 1099s.
Features
- Ask a cited federal, state, or Canadian question
- Ask in plain language. Answers are cited to government sources: US federal, states, and territories, plus Canadian federal and provincial material including the CRA. Matrix, described on the product overview, turns one multi-state question into a cited table. The FAQ says coverage is the United States and Canada, plus treaties that involve the US or Canada. Import for a client file is PDF and image only.
- Draft the memo or the notice reply
- Writer drafts client emails, tax memos, IRS and CRA notice responses, and engagement letters from the research thread and the client profile. You still edit and send. This is listed on Pro.
- Review the return with Agent Andrew
- Upload a prepared 1040, 1041, 1065, 1120, or 1120-S. Andrew returns a downloadable report. Red flags are mismatches to source documents such as W-2s and 1099s. Green flags are possible missed deductions. Cleared flags are items already resolved. The FAQ says this automates up to 90 percent of review and is still not a substitute for the reviewer's judgment. Included on Pro.
- Keep the client on one profile
- Client Intelligence stores returns, entities, filing history, and prior research so the next answer uses that client. Enterprise lists unlimited Client Intelligence entities. Pro and Pro Plus do not publish an entity cap on the pricing page.
- Prepare inside the tax software on Pro Plus
- Pro Plus adds Cowork and the tax preparation agent. The pricing FAQ says agents work inside Drake, ProConnect, UltraTax, CCH Axcess, and Lacerte, and pull documents from Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, SharePoint, SafeSend, and SmartVault. Named workflows include 1040, 1065, 1120, and 1120-S prep, extensions, amended returns, R&D credit studies, and bookkeeping. The accounting system for bookkeeping is not named. Cowork is US firms only.
