Our take

Best for
A controller or SEC reporting team that has to file, or issue a report, where the same figures must stay linked and auditable.
Not ideal if
A small company whose reporting need is the QuickBooks Online profit and loss. Workiva is a quote-only reporting workspace, not the books.
Standout
SEC forms, XBRL tagging, and EDGAR Next filing in the same workspace as linked numbers, SOX evidence, and version history.

About Workiva

Workiva is where finance, audit, risk, and sustainability teams assemble reports they have to defend. You link a number once across a spreadsheet, a narrative, and a presentation, so a change is not retyped. The finance list on the site includes annual and interim reporting, SEC reporting, multi-entity financial reporting, and internal management reporting. Risk covers controls, SOX, policies, and IT compliance. Sustainability covers carbon data and disclosure reports. The SEC page names 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, proxies, XBRL tagging, and filing through EDGAR Next.

It does not replace QuickBooks Online, and it does not close the books. You still record transactions and lock the period in the ledger or ERP. A QuickBooks connector exists, and it is a premium Wdata chain for pulling data into reports. It is not the bank feed, the chart of accounts, or the close checklist. FloQast and Numeric, already in this directory, are built for the close. Fathom is the lighter management-report layer on QuickBooks Online or Xero.

Companies buy Workiva when a filed report, a control narrative, or a sustainability disclosure has to stay tied to the same figures, with versions, permissions, and an audit trail. The buyer is a controller, an SEC reporting lead, or a similar owner. Staff accountants and control owners live in the documents. A shop that only needs the QuickBooks Online profit and loss does not need this.

Pricing

Workiva does not publish a price. Checked 2026-10-12. Seats are unlimited, so the quote is for the solution, not per user. Some products use good, better, and best packaging, and those tier names and prices are not on the page. The QuickBooks connector is labeled premium, requires a Wdata subscription, and the marketplace says additional fees may apply, without a number. A five-person QuickBooks Online shop should expect a sales cycle. Implementation is described as a guided onboarding, not a self-serve setup.

How it hits your books

Replaces your ledger
No
QuickBooks Online
Partial
Multi-entity
Partial

You still close and lock the period in QuickBooks Online or the ERP. Workiva is where those closed numbers are linked into filings, board materials, and control documentation.

External auditors can be given access to the same controlled documents, with version history. The CPA still needs the ledger file for the books. A QuickBooks Online extract through the connector is a reporting pull, not a live handoff of the file.

Features

Link a figure across the reporting set
The pricing page says every plan includes data linking across documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, plus comments, review, version history, and blackline. Change the source number once. The SEC page describes the same link from source data into filings, board decks, and related narratives.
Prepare SEC filings and submit to EDGAR
The SEC reporting page names Forms 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, 20-F, 40-F, proxies, registration statements, and Section 16 filings, plus XBRL and iXBRL tagging with a roll-forward of prior tags. It says you can file from Workiva through the EDGAR Next dashboard. The page also says the platform supports more than 350 SEC form types.
Tie SOX testing to the filing
The same SEC page says control documentation and testing can be linked to the filing, with role-based access for contributors and external auditors. Risk on the homepage covers controls, audit management, SOX, policies, and IT risk. This is control evidence beside the report, not the close checklist in the ERP.
Collect sustainability and carbon figures
The homepage lists carbon accounting, sustainability program management, framework mapping, and disclosure reports. That carbon work is greenhouse-gas data for a sustainability report. It is not inventory costing and it does not replace the ledger.
Pull source data through connectors
The pricing page says every plan includes 70+ connectors and names Oracle, Salesforce, Workday, and BlackLine, plus open APIs. QuickBooks is a separate marketplace connector marked premium. It requires Wdata. The support article updated July 1, 2026 documents an Export to CSV command from QuickBooks Online. The marketplace page also says the connector can import or export. Neither page makes Workiva the ledger.
